4/24/2023 0 Comments Ring drone![]() But Alexa is not supposed to be listening to what’s going on. The challenge for the tech industry was always: how to get inside? The Echo was a start and, to the fury of the rest of the industry, it gave Amazon a critical bridgehead in that hitherto inaccessible territory. Most of the other companies will follow suitīut a doorbell can only surveil what’s outside the home. What will happen next is entirely predictable. It enables the householder to “answer” the doorbell even when not at home, and possibly communicate with the delivery person about where to leave a package, etc. After all, a video doorbell is very useful to a company that makes a lot of deliveries, especially in the old days when everybody went out to work during the day. Ring fitted neatly into this strategic vision. The company was acquired by Amazon in 2018 for more than $1bn and incorporated into the tech giant’s global strategy for household penetration, which had been launched with the original Echo “smart” speaker. Its original products were a doorbell with an inbuilt video camera and a network connection, and an app, Neighbors, for online social sharing of captured footage among users. ![]() Ring is a company that was founded in 2013 as Doorbot. The fact that the drone is branded as a “Ring” device may have puzzled some observers, but it, er, rings a bell with those of us who monitor the tech industry. This viewer wondered about equally mundane questions: how would the device deal with his cats, which regularly roam the house seeking surfaces that are forbidden to them when he’s physically present how does the drone deal with closed internal doors – or indeed with the interior of any normal dwelling? Advertisements for so-called “smart” homes invariably feature the interiors of sterile, open-plan dwellings that no sane adult would wish to inhabit. ![]() It would be useful, for example, if you arrived at your non-remote workplace (remember them?) and wondered if you’d left the kitchen window open. But other, less dramatic uses for the drone were suggested. It came with a nice video to illustrate the above scenario – though it featured an implausibly nervous burglar who, upon seeing the drone, fled as though he had seen a ghost. It’s just Amazon’s latest gizmo – announced at its autumn hardware event on 24 September. The burglar sees and hears the drone, grasps what’s happening and flees.įiction? Not at all. The drone leaves its housing and begins a flight through the house on an inspection path that you have programmed into it, streaming live, high-definition video to your phone as it goes. A small drone sitting unobtrusively in its housing-cum-charging-station whirs into life, and your smartphone beeps. A burglar breaks in by forcing the french window in the living room. MaxTracker is raising funds to develop its products, meaning anyone can invest in the company for a limited time.H ere’s the scenario. The trackers have a battery life of up to a year and can use AI to distinguish between a bike being stolen versus getting knocked over or an older person falling down versus dropping their tracker. The startup creates small GPS trackers about the size of a thick credit card. MaxTracker, for example, is a startup integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its security products. This shouldn’t be surprising because home security products are becoming incredibly advanced. The product is available for users by invitation. While the product won’t be available until at least 2024, this isn’t a vanity project or reach goal. Using the drone's built-in video camera, you can monitor anything that's happening from your phone. If, for example, your front door alarm is triggered, the drone will undock and fly to the area to see what’s going on. Users can program the drone to fly along custom paths to see what is happening around their house anytime from anywhere. The company plans to release a mini security drone that can fly around your house. What happened: Ring’s next-generation product, while still on-brand, is a bit less traditional. It’s also released several other products like smart lighting and door locks. Recently, Ring released its new dashcam, which contains many of the same features as its doorbell. Since it’s been under the Amazon umbrella, Ring has released a number of new and innovative solutions. The startup didn’t get an investment from any sharks, but it did manage to get acquired by Inc. The startup initially catapulted to mainstream attention after it showed up on the popular startup investing show “Shark Tank.” It originally was called Doorbot but rebranded to Ring shortly after its “Shark Tank” debut. Ring revolutionized the home security industry with its namesake doorbell.
